Description

Sonora No. 7 Steam Locomotive running on a narrow gauge 36″ wide track.  This working steam engine is located in Roaring Camp, Felton, California.   Sonora No. 7 travels on a 6 mile loop through the protected redwood forest in the heart of the Santa Cruz mountains.

The 60 ton Shay engine locomotive was built in 1911 by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio.  It was purchased by the Butte and Plumas Railroad Company whose rails ran between Oroville, CA and Stanwood (about 30 miles).  The Shay engine is sometimes called a sidewinder because it is a geared steam locomotive vs. direct drive.  It allows the engine to turn at a higher speed than the wheels turn providing superior traction limiting slip on the drive wheels.
