Cherry Blossom & Owl Cozy Kit

Description

The Cherry Blossom & Owl Tea Cozy Kit makes a perfect addition to your kitchen or to help steep that pot of tea when serving your company with the White Faced Owl sitting in the tree among the cherry blossoms. It is approximately 12″ wide by 10″ tall and fits medium sized tea pots. It is constructed using double layers of felt to provide the extra insulation to help the tea steep just right.

We have had some customers buy extra green felt and add a strip between the front and rear sides to make covers for all sorts of things – can opener, toaster (unplugged of course), cookie jar (to hid it from the kids – which didn’t last long), sewing machine, and more.

Everything you need to start is right in the package including precision cut wool felt, floss, a sewing needle and instructions.

Instructions

1. Pin the tree, branch, and large gray owl to a green cozy base being careful to match the box photo.
2. Blanket stitch inside edge of the tree and all of the branch to the green cozy base.
3. Pin the sandstone owl on next followed by the gray owl wings and the black winglet.
4. Blanket stitch the outline of the owl, except for the ears, to the mat be careful to align the tips of the feathers.
5. Blanket stitch the remaining edges of the black winglet and gray wings.
6. Pin the black face and white face in place, align the lower edges with the chin of the owl and blanket stitch the edges.
7. Pin the gray ears/nose in place aligning the ears and blanket stitch this in place. Make sure to align the ears.
8. The two eye sockets are attached with a french knot in yellow forming the eyes. Chain stitch the three toed feet.
9. Add the decorative stitching on the chest, wings, tree, and owl toe nails.
10. Pin and blanket stitch the Cherry Blossom Cream petals in place. Do not add the blossom for the handle.
11. Pin and blanket stitch the pink centers of the cherry blossoms in place.
12. Add a second cozy base to form the backing and blanket stitch the bottom edge.
13. Take the remaining two cozy bases together and blanket stitch their bottom edge.
14. Stack the cozy bases (4 layers) with the owl on top and blanket stitch the rim through all four layers.
15. Pin one 1¼” cream penny to each side forming the base of the handle and blanket stitch in place.
16. Pin one cherry blossom and one pink center on each side of the handle aligning the edges and blanket stitch in place.

Our wool felt is Made in the USA from wool grown in the USA.  It is a blend of 35% wool and 65% rayon.

Why A Blend? 

• Our goal was to have a blend that is close to the wool/cotton blend which has been in use for hundreds of years through out the world.
• The wool/cotton blend was favored over 100% wool or 100% cotton as the combination provided much better service
  • The wool provided strength and warmth while the cotton added breathability and softness to touch.
  • It was an ideal combination for all kinds of weather and purposes.
• Rayon and cotton are almost identical with cotton being a little bit softer and rayon being more silky or shinny on the surface.

How are Rayon and Cotton Different?

• Rayon is made from cellulose, a carbohydrate plant substance, derived from wood and wood pulp which is then made into fibers.
• Cotton is made of cellulose fibers from the cotton plant.
