Woolly Welcome Mat Kit

Description

Our Woolly Welcome Mat Kit is 12″ x 25″.    Make your family and friends feel welcome as they enter your home.  This classic penny rug styled mat would be a great addition to an entry hall table or mounted on the wall.  It is three layers thick making it nice for a table or wall hanging.

Everything you need to start is right in the package including precision cut wool felt, floss, a sewing needle and instructions.

Instructions:

1. Carefully align and blanket stitch the light blue mat to one black mat base.
2. Layout all of the parts to match the box label and pin in place.
3. Blanket stitch the legs of the sheep in place.  Add the cream body, the saddle, the hearts or pennies, followed by the head.  Use French knots for the eyes.  Back stitch curlicues for the wool and mouth.  Repeat for each sheep.  Note; the smallest sheep has chain stitched legs.
4. Blanket stitch the house followed by the side and then the roof.  Add decorative stitching using a back stitch to make the windows, door, bricks, roof tiles, and smoke.
5. Chain stitch the grass, vines, willow tree, and text.
6. Blanket stitch the assembly to the remaining black mat.
7. Assemble the four layer penny stacks and blanket stitch all but the outer edge.
8. Sandwich the stack with the large garnet penny on each corner of the mat and blanket stitch in place.

Our wool felt is Made in the USA from wool grown in the USA.  It is a blend of 35% wool and 65% rayon.

Why A Blend? 

• Our goal was to have a blend that is close to the wool/cotton blend which has been in use for hundreds of years through out the world.
• The wool/cotton blend was favored over 100% wool or 100% cotton as the combination provided much better service
  • The wool provided strength and warmth while the cotton added breathability and softness to touch.
  • It was an ideal combination for all kinds of weather and purposes.
• Rayon and cotton are almost identical with cotton being a little bit softer and rayon being more silky or shinny on the surface.

How are Rayon and Cotton Different?

• Rayon is made from cellulose, a carbohydrate plant substance, derived from wood and wood pulp which is then made into fibers.
• Cotton is made of cellulose fibers from the cotton plant.
